Usually, in the presence of an enzyme, the reaction runs in the same direction as it would without the enzyme, just more quickly. Enzyme kinetics is the investigation of how enzymes bind substrates and turn them into products. The rate data used in kinetic analyses are commonly obtained from [[enzyme assay]]s, where since the 90s, the dynamics of many enzymes are studied on the level of [[Single-molecule experiment|individual molecules]].

Enzymes can catalyze up to several million reactions per second. For example, the uncatalyzed decarboxylation of [[orotidine 5'-monophosphate]] has a half life of 78 million years. Several enzymes can work together in a specific order, creating [[metabolic pathway]]s. In a metabolic pathway, one enzyme takes the product of another enzyme as a substrate. After the catalytic reaction, the product is then passed on to another enzyme.
