The '''Rydberg constant''', symbol ''R''∞ or ''R''H, named after the Swedish [[physicist]] [[Johannes Rydberg]], is a [[physical constant]] relating to atomic [[spectrum|spectra]], in the science of [[spectroscopy]]. The constant first arose as an empirical fitting parameter in the [[Rydberg formula]] for the [[hydrogen spectral series]], but [[Niels Bohr]] later showed that its value could be calculated from more fundamental constants, explaining the relationship via his "[[Bohr model]]". A '''chemical equation''' is the symbolic representation of a [[chemical reaction]] wherein the [[reactant]] entities are given on the left-hand side and the [[Product (chemistry)|product]] entities on the right-hand side.<ref name="goldbook">[[IUPAC]]. The Rydberg constant represents the limiting value of the highest [[wavenumber]] (the inverse wavelength) of any photon that can be emitted from the hydrogen atom, or, alternatively, the wavenumber of the lowest-energy photon capable of ionizing the hydrogen atom from its ground state. The spectrum of hydrogen can be expressed simply in terms of the Rydberg constant, using the [[Rydberg formula]].

A chemical equation consists of the [[chemical formulas]] of the reactants (the starting substances) and the chemical formula of the products (substances formed in the chemical reaction). The two are separated by an arrow symbol ([[Arrow (symbol)|<math>\rightarrow</math>]], usually read as "yields") and each individual substance's chemical formula is separated from others by a [[plus sign]].
The '''Rydberg unit of energy''', symbol Ry, is closely related to the Rydberg constant. It corresponds to the energy of the photon whose wavenumber is the Rydberg constant, i.e. the ionization energy of the hydrogen atom.

As an example, the equation for the reaction of [[hydrochloric acid]] with [[sodium]] can be denoted:
==Value of the Rydberg constant and Rydberg unit of energy==
According to the 2010 [[CODATA]], the constant is:

:2 {{chem|HCl}} + 2 {{chem|Na}} → 2 {{chem|NaCl}} + {{chem|H|2}}
:<math>R_\infty = \frac{m_\text{e} e^4}{8 {\varepsilon_0}^2 h^3 c} = 1.097\;373\;156\;8539(55) \times 10^7 \,\text{m}^{-1},</math><ref name="codata"/>
where <math>m_\text{e}</math> is the [[rest mass]] of the [[electron]], <math>e</math> is the [[elementary charge]], <math>\varepsilon_0</math> is the [[permittivity of free space]], <math>h</math> is the [[Planck constant]], and <math>c</math> is the [[speed of light]] in a vacuum.

This equation would be read as "two HCl plus two Na yields two NaCl and H two." But, for equations involving complex chemicals, rather than reading the letter and its subscript, the chemical formulas are read using [[IUPAC nomenclature]]. Using IUPAC nomenclature, this equation would be read as "hydrochloric acid plus sodium yields [[sodium chloride]] and [[hydrogen]] gas."
This constant is often used in [[atomic physics]] in the form of the Rydberg unit of energy:
:<math>1 \ \text{Ry} \equiv h c R_\infty = 13.605\;692\;53(30) \,\text{eV}.</math><ref name="codata"/>

This equation indicates that sodium and HCl react to form NaCl and H2. It also indicates that two sodium molecules are required for every two hydrochloric acid molecules and the reaction will form two sodium chloride molecules and one [[Diatomic molecule|diatomic]] molecule of hydrogen gas molecule for every two hydrochloric acid and two sodium molecules that react. The [[stoichiometric coefficients]] (the numbers in front of the chemical formulas) result from the [[conservation of mass|law of conservation of mass]] and the [[charge conservation|law of conservation of charge]] (see "Balancing Chemical Equation" section below for more information).
==Occurrence in Bohr model==
{{main|Bohr model}}
The [[Bohr model]] explains the atomic [[spectrum]] of hydrogen (see [[hydrogen spectral series]]) as well as various other atoms and ions. It is not perfectly accurate, but is a remarkably good approximation in many cases, and historically played an important role in the development of [[quantum mechanics]]. The Bohr model posits that electrons revolve around the atomic nucleus in a manner analogous to planets revolving around the sun.

== Common symbols==
In the simplest version of the Bohr model, the mass of the atomic nucleus is considered to be infinite compared to the mass of the electron,<ref name="coffman">{{cite journal |title=Correction to the Rydberg Constant for Finite Nuclear Mass |journal=American Journal of Physics|volume=33 |issue=10 |pages=820–823 |year=1965 |doi=10.1119/1.1970992|bibcode = 1965AmJPh..33..820C |last1=Coffman |first1=Moody L. }}</ref> so that the center of mass of the system lies at the [[center of mass|barycenter]] of the nucleus. This infinite mass approximation is what is alluded to with the <math>\infty</math> subscript. The Bohr model then predicts that the wavelengths of hydrogen atomic transitions are (see [[Rydberg formula]]):
Symbols are used to differentiate between different types of reactions. To denote the type of reaction:<ref name="goldbook"/>
:<math>\frac{1}{\lambda} = R_\infty\left(\frac{1}{n_1^2}-\frac{1}{n_2^2}\right)=\frac{m_\text{e} e^4}{8 \varepsilon_0^2 h^3 c} \left(\frac{1}{n_1^2}-\frac{1}{n_2^2}\right) </math>
where ''n''1 and ''n''2 are any two different positive integers (1, 2, 3, ...), and <math>\lambda</math> is the wavelength (in vacuum) of the emitted or absorbed light.

* "<math>=</math>" symbol is used to denote a [[stoichiometric]] relation.
A refinement of the Bohr model takes into account the fact that the mass of the atomic nucleus is not actually infinite compared to the mass of the electron. Then the formula is:<ref name="coffman"/>
* "<math>\rightarrow</math>" symbol is used to denote a net forward reaction.
:<math>\frac{1}{\lambda} = R_M\left(\frac{1}{n_1^2}-\frac{1}{n_2^2}\right)</math>
* "<math>\rightleftarrows</math>" symbol is used to denote a reaction in both directions.
where <math>R_M = R_\infty/(1+m_{\text{e}}/M),</math> and ''M'' is the total mass of the atom. This formula comes from substituting the [[reduced mass]] for the mass of the electron.
* "<math>\rightleftharpoons</math>" symbol is used to denote an [[chemical equilibrium|equilibrium]].

Physical state of chemicals is also very commonly stated in parentheses after the chemical symbol, especially for ionic reactions. When stating physical state, (s) denotes a solid, (l) denotes a liquid, (g) denotes a gas and (aq) denotes an [[aqueous solution]].
A generalization of the Bohr model describes a hydrogen-like ion; that is, an atom with atomic number ''Z'' that has only one electron, such as C5+. In this case, the wavenumbers and photon energies are scaled up by a factor of ''Z''2 in the model.

If the reaction requires energy, it is indicated above the arrow. A capital Greek letter delta (<math>\Delta</math>) is put on the reaction arrow to show that energy in the form of heat is added to the reaction. <math>h\nu</math> is used if the energy is added in the form of light.

The [[law of conservation of mass]] dictates that the quantity of each element does not change in a chemical reaction. Thus, each side of the chemical equation must represent the same quantity of any particular element. Likewise, the charge is conserved in a chemical reaction. Therefore, the same charge must be present on both sides of the balanced equation.
Since the Bohr model is not perfectly accurate, due to [[fine structure]], [[hyperfine splitting]], and other such effects, the Rydberg constant <math>R_{\infty}</math> cannot be ''directly'' measured at very high accuracy from the [[atomic spectral line|atomic transition frequencies]] of hydrogen alone. Instead, the Rydberg constant is inferred from measurements of atomic transition frequencies in three different atoms ([[hydrogen]], [[deuterium]], and [[antiprotonic helium]]). Detailed theoretical calculations in the framework of [[quantum electrodynamics]] are used to account for the effects of finite nuclear mass, fine structure, hyperfine splitting, and so on. One balances a chemical equation by changing the scalar number for each chemical formula. Simple chemical equations can be balanced by inspection, that is, by trial and error. Another technique involves solving a [[system of linear equations]].
==Alternative expressions==
The Rydberg constant can also be expressed as in the following equations.

Balanced equations are written with smallest whole-number coefficients. If there is no coefficient before a chemical formula, the coefficient 1 is understood.
:<math>R_\infty = \frac{\alpha^2 m_\text{e} c}{4 \pi \hbar} = \frac{\alpha^2}{2 \lambda_{\text{e}}} = \frac{\alpha}{4\pi a_0}</math>

where
:<math>m_\text{e}</math> is the [[electron rest mass]]
:<math>e</math> is the [[electric charge]] of the electron,
:<math>h</math> is the [[Planck constant]]
:<math>\hbar= h/2\pi</math> is the [[reduced Planck constant]],
:<math>c</math> is the [[speed of light]] in a vacuum,
:<math>\varepsilon_0</math> is the [[permittivity]] of free space,
:<math>\alpha</math> is the [[fine-structure constant]],
:<math>\lambda_{\text{e}} = h/m_\text{e} c</math> is the [[Compton wavelength]] of the electron,
:<math>f_{\text{C}}=m_{\text{e}} c^2/h</math> is the Compton frequency of the electron,
:<math>\omega_{\text{C}}=2\pi f_{\text{C}}</math> is the Compton angular frequency of the electron,
:<math>a_0=\frac{4\pi\varepsilon_0\hbar^2}{e^2m_{\text{e}}}</math> is the [[Bohr radius]],
:<math>r_\mathrm{e} = \frac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}\frac{e^2}{m_{\mathrm{e}} c^2} </math> is the [[Classical electron radius]].

The method of inspection can be outlined as putting a coefficient of 1 in front of the most complex chemical formula and putting the other coefficients before everything else such that both sides of the arrows have the same number of each atom. If any [[fraction (mathematics)|fractional]] coefficient exist, multiply every coefficient with the smallest number required to make them whole, typically the [[denominator]] of the fractional coefficient for a reaction with a single fractional coefficient.

As an example, seen in the above image, the burning of methane would be balanced by putting a coefficient of 1 before the CH4:
The last expression in the first equation shows that the wavelength of light needed to ionize a hydrogen atom is 4π/α times the Bohr radius of the atom.

:1 CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
The second equation is relevant because its value is the coefficient for the energy of the atomic orbitals of a hydrogen atom: <math>E_n = -h c R_\infty / n^2 </math>.

Since there is one carbon on each side of the arrow, the first atom (carbon) is balanced.

Looking at the next atom (hydrogen), the right-hand side has two atoms, while the left-hand side has four. To balance the hydrogens, 2 goes in front of the H2O, which yields:

:1 CH4 + O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O

Inspection of the last atom to be balanced (oxygen) shows that the right-hand side has four atoms, while the left-hand side has two. It can be balanced by putting a 2 before O2, giving the balanced equation:

:CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O

This equation does not have any coefficients in front of CH4 and CO2, since a coefficient of 1 is dropped.

==Ionic equations==

An ionic equation is a chemical equation in which [[electrolyte]]s are written as dissociated [[ion]]s. Ionic equations are used for [[single displacement reaction|single]] and [[double displacement reaction]]s that occur in [[aqueous]] [[solution]]s. For example in the following precipitation reaction:
:CaCl2(aq) + 2 AgNO3(aq) → Ca(NO3)2(aq) + 2 AgCl(s)

the full ionic equation is:
:Ca2+(aq) + 2 Cl−(aq) + 2 Ag+(aq) + 2 NO3−(aq) → Ca2+(aq) + 2 NO3−(aq) + 2 AgCl(s)

In this reaction, the Ca2+ and the NO3− ions remain in solution and are not part of the reaction. That is, these ions are identical on both the reactant and product side of the chemical equation. Because such ions do not participate in the reaction, they are called [[spectator ion]]s. A ''net ionic'' equation is the full ionic equation from which the spectator ions have been removed. The net ionic equation of the proceeding reactions is:
:2 Cl−(aq) + 2 Ag+(aq) → 2 AgCl(s)

or, in ''reduced'' balanced form,
:Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) → AgCl(s)

In a [[Neutralization (chemistry)|neutralization]] or [[acid]]/[[Base (chemistry)|base]] reaction, the net ionic equation will usually be:

:H+(aq) + OH−(aq) → H2O(l)

There are a few acid/base reactions that produce a precipitate in addition to the water molecule shown above. An example is the reaction of [[barium hydroxide]] with [[phosphoric acid]], which produces not only water but also the insoluble salt barium phosphate. In this reaction, there are no spectator ions, so the net ionic equation is the same as the full ionic equation.

:3 Ba(OH)2(aq) + 2 H3PO4(aq) → 6 H2O(l) + Ba3(PO4)2(s)
:3 Ba2+(aq) + 6 OH-(aq) + 6 H+(aq) + 2 PO43-(aq) → 6 H2O(l) + Ba3(PO4)2(s)

Double displacement reactions that feature a [[carbonate]] reacting with an acid have the net ionic equation:

:2 H+(aq) + CO32−(aq) → H2O(l) + CO2(g)

If every ion is a "spectator ion" then there was no reaction, and the net ionic equation is null.

The Rydberg constant, symbol R or RH, named after the Swedish physicist Johannes Rydberg, is a physical constant relating to atomic spectra, in the science of spectroscopy. The constant first arose as an empirical fitting parameter in the Rydberg formula for the hydrogen spectral series, but Niels Bohr later showed that its value could be calculated from more fundamental constants, explaining the relationship via his "Bohr model". As of 2012, R and electron spin g-factor are the most accurately measured fundamental physical constants.[1]

The Rydberg constant represents the limiting value of the highest wavenumber (the inverse wavelength) of any photon that can be emitted from the hydrogen atom, or, alternatively, the wavenumber of the lowest-energy photon capable of ionizing the hydrogen atom from its ground state. The spectrum of hydrogen can be expressed simply in terms of the Rydberg constant, using the Rydberg formula.

The Rydberg unit of energy, symbol Ry, is closely related to the Rydberg constant. It corresponds to the energy of the photon whose wavenumber is the Rydberg constant, i.e. the ionization energy of the hydrogen atom.

Value of the Rydberg constant and Rydberg unit of energy

According to the 2010 CODATA, the constant is:

[2]

where is the rest mass of the electron, is the elementary charge, is the permittivity of free space, is the Planck constant, and is the speed of light in a vacuum.

This constant is often used in atomic physics in the form of the Rydberg unit of energy:

Occurrence in Bohr model

Mining Engineer (Excluding Oil ) Truman from Alma, loves to spend time knotting, largest property developers in singapore developers in singapore and stamp collecting. Recently had a family visit to Urnes Stave Church. The Bohr model explains the atomic spectrum of hydrogen (see hydrogen spectral series) as well as various other atoms and ions. It is not perfectly accurate, but is a remarkably good approximation in many cases, and historically played an important role in the development of quantum mechanics. The Bohr model posits that electrons revolve around the atomic nucleus in a manner analogous to planets revolving around the sun.

In the simplest version of the Bohr model, the mass of the atomic nucleus is considered to be infinite compared to the mass of the electron,[3] so that the center of mass of the system lies at the barycenter of the nucleus. This infinite mass approximation is what is alluded to with the subscript. The Bohr model then predicts that the wavelengths of hydrogen atomic transitions are (see Rydberg formula):

where n1 and n2 are any two different positive integers (1, 2, 3, ...), and is the wavelength (in vacuum) of the emitted or absorbed light.

A refinement of the Bohr model takes into account the fact that the mass of the atomic nucleus is not actually infinite compared to the mass of the electron. Then the formula is:[3]

where and M is the total mass of the atom. This formula comes from substituting the reduced mass for the mass of the electron.

A generalization of the Bohr model describes a hydrogen-like ion; that is, an atom with atomic number Z that has only one electron, such as C5+. In this case, the wavenumbers and photon energies are scaled up by a factor of Z2 in the model.

Precision measurement

The Rydberg constant is one of the most well-determined physical constants, with a relative experimental uncertainty of fewer than 7 parts in 1012. The ability to measure it to such a high precision constrains the proportions of the values of the other physical constants that define it.[2] See precision tests of QED.

Since the Bohr model is not perfectly accurate, due to fine structure, hyperfine splitting, and other such effects, the Rydberg constant cannot be directly measured at very high accuracy from the atomic transition frequencies of hydrogen alone. Instead, the Rydberg constant is inferred from measurements of atomic transition frequencies in three different atoms (hydrogen, deuterium, and antiprotonic helium). Detailed theoretical calculations in the framework of quantum electrodynamics are used to account for the effects of finite nuclear mass, fine structure, hyperfine splitting, and so on. Finally, the value of comes from the best fit of the measurements to the theory.[4]

Alternative expressions

The Rydberg constant can also be expressed as in the following equations.

and

where

is the electron rest mass
is the electric charge of the electron,
is the Planck constant
is the reduced Planck constant,
is the speed of light in a vacuum,
is the permittivity of free space,
is the fine-structure constant,
is the Compton wavelength of the electron,
is the Compton frequency of the electron,
is the Compton angular frequency of the electron,
is the Bohr radius,
is the Classical electron radius.

The last expression in the first equation shows that the wavelength of light needed to ionize a hydrogen atom is 4π/α times the Bohr radius of the atom.

The second equation is relevant because its value is the coefficient for the energy of the atomic orbitals of a hydrogen atom: .
