Scarlett Johansson Soon To Appear In GravityScarlett Johansson was born in New York City on 22 November 1984. Her parents are of Polish and Danish descent. Scarlett displayed an interest in acting from a young age, and had appearances in many plays. She was most recently seen with Robert Downey Jr in in the highly anticipated Iron Man 2 as Black Widow, released in May 2010. She will appear with Downey Jr again in the upcoming movie Gravity.
Johansson really began her acting career by starring as Laura Nelson in North, which was released in 1994. Johansson earned both critical praise and worldwide recognition in 1998 when she appeared in the acclaimed film The Horse Whisperer which starred Robert Redford.
After the success she enjoyed with The Horse Whisperer, she starred in several other films including the critically acclaimed movie Ghost World in 2001 and then she again stunned critics with 2003's Lost in Translation with Bill Murray (directed by Sofia Coppela). Later that year, she appeared in Girl with a Pearl Earring.
In 2004, she was nominated for two Golden Globes, once for the drama, Girl with a Pearl Earring as well as once for the comedy Lost in Translation. Johansson was slated to appear in Mission: Impossible III but because filming of the Tom Cruise flick dragged on (the film wasn't released until 2006) she dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. Her next film was The Island with Ewan McGregor but the film earned weak reviews from U.S. critics.
Johansson followed up with the first of three Woody Allen movies, Match Point in 2005, for which she earned yet another Golden Globe nomination and then the next year in Scoop opposite Hugh Jackman. Following up on those with The Other Boleyn Girl with Natalie Portman and Eric Bana.
Most recently, Johansson was seen in the blockbuster Iron Man 2 with Robert Downey Jr as Black Widow. Before that she was in her 3rd Woody Allen directed film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and as a singer/yoga instructor in the cast of He's Just Not That Into You. She has an older sister, Vanessa Johansson, who is an actress in her own right, a brother named Adrian, and a twin brother named Hunter who was born three minutes after Scarlett.

In Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson got the chance to show off her fighting skills as she went up against Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Whip Lash (Mickey Rourke) in the big sequel that came out in May 2010. Johansson played Natalia Romanova, a former soviet agent who will attempt to steal the Iron Man technology from Stark. Scarlett will be reprising her role of Natasha/Black Widow in 2012 when she films the superhero flick, The Avengers.

Scarlett Johansson: The Illustrated BiographyBorn in 1985 in New York, young Scarlett Marie Johansson has already achieved a cinematic career of incredible proportion, swiftly becoming an icon.
Johansson has been seen as the face of Calvin Klein, L'Oreal and Reebok, and described as the new Marilyn Monroe by Vogue magazine, she's also proved her mettle as a quality actress, starring in movies as diverse as Woody Allen features, gung-ho action romps like Michael Bay's The Island, and of course, alternative, hip fare like the film which made her name known the world over, Sofia Coppola's much-lauded Lost in Translation. Searching for the essence of her luminous star quality, this book takes a critical look at her work, and traces her transformation from talented child actress to Hollywood icon.
Scarlett Johansson: The Illustrated BiographyChris Roberts has written about music and film for 15 years, and is currently a regular contributor to UK broadsheet the Guardian and leading film monthly Uncut magazine. His previous books include Idol Worship (Harper Collins, 1997), and Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side: The Stories Behind the Songs (2003).

1998 The Horse WhispererAlthough it's best viewed on a big theatrical screen to take full advantage of Robert Richardson's breathtaking widescreen cinematography, it seems likely that most people will see this classy romance in the comfort of their own homes. Adapted from the bestseller by Nicholas Evans and directed by Robert Redford, the film did respectable business at the box-office, but it was too sprawling and too soapy to be a bona fide hit. Redford stars as the title character, a Montana rancher named Tom Booker, who possesses the specialized talent of healing traumatized horses through careful and affectionate rehabilitation. He gets his most challenging case when he's sought out by a fast-lane New York magazine editor (Kristin Scott Thomas, in a role modeled after former New Yorker editor Tina Brown) whose daughter (Scarlett Johansson) was injured and traumatized by an accident that nearly killed her favorite horse. When mother, daughter, and horse arrive at Booker's ranch, the big-city editor falls in love with the serene rancher and faces the painful decision of whether to stay in Montana or return to her husband (Sam Neill) in New York.
1999 My Brother the PigBeing a teen is tough enough for Kathy (Scarlet Johansson) without having to be the target of her little brother George (Nick Fuoco) for continuous practical jokes. But life really gets crazy when dad & mom leave for France & George is magically transformed into a pig. With Eva Mendez, Judge Reinhold and Romy Windsor.
2001 Ghost WorldThora Birch (American Beauty) and Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation) "sneak into your heart and stay there" (Rolling Stone) in this "eerie, masterful movie" (Movieline) from the acclaimed director of Crumb. Co-starring Brad Renfro (Deuces Wild), Illeana Douglas (Stir of Echos) and Steve Buscemi (Fargo) in "the best role of his career" (Movieline), Ghost World is a "smartly strange comedy [that] stands out like the Taj Mahal" (Time)! While their classmates head for college, Enid (Birch) and Rebecca (Johansson) focus their energies on tormenting those around them - from a goofy convenience store clerk (Renfro) to an eccentric art teacher (Douglas). But when they zero in on an oddball loner (Buscemi) looking for Miss Right, their seemingly innocent meddling threatens to shatter one of their hearts not to mention their lifelong friendship.
2003 Girl With A Pearl EarringYou wouldn't think a movie could look like a Vermeer painting, but Girl with a Pearl Earring is filmed with an amazing range of luminous glows that evoke the Dutch artist's masterworks. Of course, it helps that much of the movie centers on Scarlett Johansson, whose creamy skin and full lips have a luminosity of their own. Johansson plays Griet, a maid in the household of Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth), who finds herself in a web of jealousy, artistic inspiration, and social machinations. Though the pace is slow, Girl with a Pearl Earring genuinely conveys some sense of an artist's process, as well as offering many chaste yet sensual moments between Firth and Johansson. Also featuring Essie Davis as Vermeer's bitter wife and Tom Wilkinson as a wealthy patron with eyes for Griet.
2003 Lost in TranslationEnvelops you with an aura of fantastic light, moody sound, head-turning love, and a feeling of deja vu, even though you've probably never been to this neon-fused version of Tokyo. Certainly Bob Harris has not. The 50-ish actor has signed on for big money shooting whiskey ads instead of doing something good for his career or his long-distance family. Jetlagged, helplessly lost with his Japanese-speaking director, and out of sync with the metropolis, Harris (Bill Murray, never better) befriends the married but lovelorn 25-year-old Charlotte (played with heaps of poise by 18-year-old Scarlett Johansson). Even before her photographer husband all but abandons her, she is adrift like Harris but in a total entrapment of youth. How Charlotte and Bill discover they are soul mates will be cherished for years to come. Written and directed by Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), the film is far more atmospheric than plot-driven: we whiz through Tokyo parties, karaoke bars, and odd nightlife, always ending up in the impossibly posh hotel where the two are staying. The wisps of bittersweet loneliness of Bill and Charlotte are handled smartly and romantically, but unlike modern studio films, this isn't a May-November fling film. Surely and steadily, the film ends on a much-talked-about grace note, which may burn some, yet awards film lovers who "always had Paris" with another cinematic destination of the heart.
See all 17 photos Johansson Won A Bafta For Lost In TranslationNominated Twice in 2004 For Golden GlobesScarlett Johansson won the best actress Bafta at the 2004 British Academy Of Film And Television Arts Awards in London for her role of Charlotte, a young married woman in Japan who meets up with Bob Harris (excellently played by Bill Murray) in Lost In Translation. Johansson was just 18 years old when she played the role and was an obvious critics' and movie-goers' favorite.
About winning the Bafta, Johansson said at the time "It was all so overwhelming. It's nice to be recognized for the work you put into something, but I'm just as happy if people enjoy the film. It's lovely to be nominated, but it's absolutely exhausting. It's like vying for a political position."
She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for the same role as well as having a second Golden Globe nomination the same year for The Girl With The Pearl Earring.
She followed those nominations up with yet another Globe nomination for her strong work in Match Point in 2005.
2004 The SpongeBob SquarePants MovieHow many movies offer the rare spectacle of a parasailing pink starfish flying over a crowd with a congratulatory pennant clenched between his buttcheeks? And that's only the tip of the iceberg--The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a freewheeling goof of a cartoon, full of surreal twists as its diminutive heroes head down a dangerous road to rescue the lost crown of King Neptune. SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny), an arrested adolescent in the mold of Pee-wee Herman, works at a fast-food restaurant that serves something called Krabby Patties (as the restaurant owner is himself a crab, it's not clear what exactly they're made of). His best friend Patrick Starfish (Bill Fagerbakke) lives under a rock and has an IQ in the lower digits. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot as they strive for manliness. Anyone seeking a coherent world will be disappointed; in this undersea adventure, things catch on fire or seem to be surrounded by air whenever it's convenient for a gag. The jokes are often more silly than actually funny, but there's an undeniably energetic joviality to the proceedings. Featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and a fully fleshed appearance by David Hasselhoff.
2004 A Love Song for Bobby LongRe-establishing his indie-cred, John Travolta adds Bobby Long to his gallery of colorful characters. Hobbled by an infected toe, the 50-something Bobby is a white-haired, unshaven, vodka-soaked mess. But he's also a former English professor, and the piles of books in his ramshackle house, and the authors he drunkenly quotes give him a wounded dignity. Bobby lives with Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), his former teaching assistant who is writing a book about his mentor, a project deferred by drinking, sitting around with the locals, or engaging in quotation oneupsmanship.
Scarlett Johansson holds her own against Travolta ("You are such a shameless ham," she chastises the loquacious Bobby) as Pursy, the estranged daughter of Lorraine, a recently deceased singer-songwriter in whose house Bobby and Lawson reside. A battle of wills between the two men and the headstrong young girl gives way to the formation of a tentative family unit. Pursy agrees to return to high school if Bobby and Lawson quit drinking.
See all 17 photos Scarlett Johansson And Woody AllenShe's Appeared In Three Of Woody's MoviesScarlett Johansson has had major parts in three of Woody Allen's latest movies: Match Point (2005) and Scoop (2006) and the most recently released, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).
According to Allen, Johansson is "criminally sexy" and one of his favorite actresses. He says that she would be his first pick in many roles.
On Woody Allen once calling her his muse, Johansson said "I don't inspire that work that Woody does. I'm just lucky to fit into the 'young woman' category in his movies. But make no mistake, I know that if it wasn't me, it would be someone else."
2006 ScoopLight and charming, Scoop blends murder, ghosts, and falling in love. While inside of a magician's magic cabinet, aspiring journalist Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson) is visiting by the ghost of a dead reporter (Ian McShane) who has gotten a hot tip in the afterlife: A rising young politician named Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman) may be the notorious serial killer who leaves tarot cards by his victims. With the magician (writer-director Woody Allen) in tow, Sondra sneaks her way into Lyman's life--and, despite increasing evidence that the tip is true, finds herself falling in love with him. Scoop has flashes of suspense and wit that, in an unknown filmmaker, would be cause for celebration. Also featuring Charles Dance (White Mischief) and Romola Garai (I Capture the Castle), one of the few actresses who can compete with Johansson in lusciousness.

2007 The Nanny DiariesBased on The Nanny Diaries: A Novel, the best-selling book of the same name, the film version of The Nanny Diaries is about recent college graduate Annie Braddock (a brunette Scarlett Johansson) becomes the nanny for Mr. and Mrs. X, a narcissistic and selfish couple who have no clue that what their precocious son Grayer really needs is a mom and a dad who will pay attention to him. At first, Annie can't believe her good fortune. Caring for Grayer a few hours each day in the X's luxurious apartment seems like a dream job. But as her job turns into a 24/7 nightmare, she loses her identity and becomes Nanny. Annie's attempts to befriend her oddly charismatic boss are met with rebuffs by Mrs. X (Laura Linney). When Annie mentions her home life, Mrs. X is stunned. "Nanny, you never mentioned you had a mother," she says, as if she expected that nannies were shot out of giant pods. Despite the film's flaws, Linney is a standout. Like Meryl Streep, who made an unlikeable character sympathetic in The Devils Wears Prada, Linney brings humor to her role. Unfortunately, Paul Giamatti (as the philandering Mr. X) and singer Alicia Keys (as Annie's best friend Lynette) are wasted in their thankless roles. While we are meant to feel sorry for Annie, we are left wondering why a beautiful and educated young American woman would allow herself to be manipulated into working ridiculous hours for less than minimum-wage pay.
2008 The Other Boleyn GirlA tale of two sisters competing for the same king, The Other Boleyn Girl uses historical facts as window dressing for this work of fiction that is entertaining, if not wholly believable. Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) is the doe-eyed vixen ordered by her power-hungry uncle to bewitch King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Her shy sister Mary (Scarlett Johansson) has always been in Anne's shadow; Anne is prettier, more accomplished, and desired by many men. So when the King picks Mary--the "other Boleyn girl"--as his mistress, Anne turns on her sister and schemes to become not only the King's consort, but his new queen. With a pair of American actresses in the lead roles and an Aussie portraying their hunky object of desire, the English accents are all over the place in this period piece with a modern feel. Though the Boleyn girls' mother points out that her "daughters are being traded like cattle for the advancement of men," it is Anne who ultimately throws her slight weight around to bully Henry into doing her bidding. Based on Philippa Gregory's bestselling novel of the same name, The Other Boleyn Girl features an attractive cast and a familiar plot with some icky twists. Kieran McGuigan's cinematography is breathtaking and is as crucial to setting the film's tone as the dialogue.
2008 The SpiritMoments of startling beauty punctuate the comic-book action flick The Spirit, written and directed by Frank Miller, the legendary writer/artist behind the reinventions of superheroes like Daredevil and Batman and the creator of the comic books of Sin City and 300. The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) once a beat cop named Denny Colt, now a resilient masked crime-fighter who returned from the dead -- tangles with his nemesis, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), and a slew of slinky dames along the way (played by Scarlett Johansson, Paz Vega, Jaime King, and more). But the real struggle is the Spirit being pulled between the girl he loved once (Eva Mendes) and the girl he loves now (Sarah Paulson). Miller applies his trademarked hyperbolic tough-guy approach--a perverse mixture of ultraviolence and melodramatic sentimentality--to the whimsical 1940s detective hero created by Will Eisner.
2009 Vicky Cristina BarcelonaIt must be true that getting out of town can do a fellow a lot of good, because Vicky Cristina Barcelona is the best movie Woody Allen has made in years. Rebecca Hall (Vicky) and Scarlett Johansson (Cristina) play two young Americans, best friends, spending a summer in Catalonia. Vicky is going for a master's in "Catalan identity" (though her Spanish is shaky); Cristina is going along for, oh, just about anything. That soon includes celebrated abstract artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), who's anything but abstract in his forthright proposition that the two join him in his private plane, his travels, and his bed. That he has an insane ex-wife, Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), who may or may not have tried to kill him is not really an issue until the wife reappears and ... well, consider the possibilities.
2009 He's Just Not That into YouBased on the bestseller by two Sex and the City scribes, He's Just Not That Into You confirms that the HBO series was more than just a television show--it was a cultural institution that spawned tours, catchphrases, fashion trends, and more. Ironically, the resulting film is both smarter and funnier than the big-screen version of Carrie and the gang. Of the nine central characters, the sweet, if clueless Gigi (Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin) makes the most vivid impression. The Maryland career girl tends to fall for friendly guys, like Conor (Entourage's Kevin Connolly), who are "just not that into" her. At a local watering hole, she meets bar manager Alex (Justin Long, Goodwin's Ed co-star), who sets her straight about the difference between what men say and what they mean, adding that there are exceptions to every rule. Her seemingly settled co-workers, Beth (Jennifer Aniston) and Janine (Jennifer Connelly), have relationship issues of their own: Beth's boyfriend of seven years, Neil (Ben Affleck), doesn't believe in marriage, and Janine's husband, Ben (Bradley Cooper), has a wandering eye... for singer/yoga instructor Anna (Scarlett Johansson). Alt-weekly ad saleswoman Mary (executive producer Drew Barrymore) provides the link between this loose-knit community. An avid Internet dater and full-time technophile, she bemoans the fact that "people don't meet each other organically anymore."
